Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

HOMER — A pair of Valley swimmers earned individual titles during the Region III Swimming and Diving Championships in Homer on Saturday.
Colony’s Alex Kessler and Palmer’s Noelle Graham each won Region III gold during the final round of the two-day meet. Kessler won his championship in the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke, notching a time of 1 minute and 2.68 seconds. He was about two seconds faster than second-place Daniel McElory of Soldotna.
Graham won her crown in the girls’ 100 butterfly. She finished with a time of 1:00.17, to finish three seconds faster than second-place Kaitlyn Groleske of Soldotna.
Kessler placed in a pair of individual events to lead the Knights to a third-place finish in the team standings. Kessler also placed second in the 200 freestyle.
Zane Mileur, Zach Bloom, Larkin Udomporn and Joseph Anderson also placed in the top 6 in two events each.
Mileur was third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Anderson finished fifth in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Udomporn was fifth in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 50 freestyle.
Colony finished with 45 points in the team standings.
The Palmer girls also finished third in the team standings. Graham added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke to her win in the butterfly. Katie Stark posted a pair of third-place finishes, notching a top 3 spot in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Naomi Graham was fourth in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 free.
The Palmer relay teams were second in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Sammantha Laselle finished sixth in the girls’ 1-meter diving.
Daniel Jackson led the Palmer boys with a pair of third-place finishes. Jackson was third in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Joe Provo and Naephe Huntington were fifth and sixth respectively in the boys’ 1-meter dive. The Palmer boys also finished second in the 400 relay.
Eliza Zugg led the Colony girls with a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle.
Connor Minder was fifth in the 100 backstroke to lead the Wasilla boys, while Mike Foy finished sixth in the 500 freestyle for the Warriors.
