PALMER — Anyone chilled to the bone by cold, windy conditions at this weekend’s Palmer Invitational and Palmer Relays could have found relief near the blazing hot performance of Wasilla’s Morgan Dampier.

The Warriors star seemed unaffected by the weather, breaking her own state record in the 800 meter run and leading Wasilla to a runaway win in Friday’s Palmer Invite. Dampier won the 800 with a blistering time of 2 minutes, 12.27 seconds, shattering her own state mark of 2:13.95 set at last year’s state meet. She also won the 200 (26.18) and long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 8.75 inches, and was third in the 100-meter dash (13.42).

Overall, the Warrior girls’ 129 team points far outdistanced second place Colony at 78, with Dampier accounting for 36 of Wasilla’s team points. The Palmer girls came in at fifth place with 50 points, Houston ninth with 23 and Su Valley rounded out the Valley contingent in 14th with 1 team point.

While Dampier’s 800 time was doubly impressive because she ran it against a stiff wind and biting cold, Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said the effort won’t be recognized as an official state record. He said a record only counts if it happens at the state meet.

“Yeah, I’m not a fan of that, not at all,” Howell said, praising how Dampier can compete at such a high level in adverse conditions. “She’s kind of a freak, she is.”

While Dampier was busy breaking her own state mark, teammate Dajanae Harris was exacting a little revenge. The defending state champion in the 100, Harris was still smarting from a recent close loss in the sprint by Lathrop’s Alisha Allen. On Friday, Harris turned the tables, winning the 100 in 13.28.

The sophomore went on to finish fourth in the long jump and won Saturday’s triple jump at the Palmer Relays. Her leap of 34-4.5 was a personal best and a full 2 feet farther than her previous best.

“Last week she jumped 32.4, I think,” said Howell, adding Harris has potential to be a premier triple jumper. “I think this is more of her forte, because she has great horizontal speed, great lateral speed.”

After posting her best at the triple jump, Harris was still pumped up from her 100 win.

“I took that loss (to Allen) very hard,” she said. “That was just unacceptable, and it (motivates) me. I love the 100. It just makes you feel so good when you’re running, and it’s such a short race you have to build your speed faster and it’s more competitive, I think.”

Something all the athletes battled Friday and Saturday was the driving wind and cold, Howell said. So, what’s worse — the wind or the cold?

“Yes,” Howell quipped. “You have to kind of hold them back. It’s a fine line between pushing them to do their best, but don’t go all out, because if you do in the cold you risk pulling something.”

For Colony, senior Shellina Irwin continues to be a consistent top performer. She won the discus Friday with a throw of 119-10.5, more than 13 inches farther than second-place Savanna James of Houston, who tossed 106-3. Irwin also won the shot put with a heave of 37-4. Erin LaMere of Palmer was second (34-11).

The Knights also were bolstered by their distance runners; specifically a win in the 3.200 relay in 10:14.26.

Palmer boys roll

While the Wasilla girls enjoyed more success, the Palmer boys are peaking at the right time with two weeks left before the regional meet, said Moose head coach Tim Papowski. Palmer won the boys meet with 109 points, topping second-place Lathrop (86.5), third-place Colony (72) and Wasilla in fourth place (53).

Leading the way is senior Jim McCall, who won the 100 and 200, placed second in the long jump and was part of Palmer’s second-place 400-meter relay team at Friday’s Palmer Invitational.

“It went pretty well,” Papowski said of the weekend. “The weather didn’t help as far as people coming to watch, but the kids ran pretty hard. We had the closest finishes we’ve had in awhile as far as team points.”

McCall provides key senior leadership during competition and practice, the coach said. It was the same on Friday.

“Jim McCall’s out there doing his thing, and everybody PR’d pretty good,” Papowski said.

In addition to McCall, Palmers distance runners “really came through pretty big,” the coach said. The Moose won the 3,200-meter relay Friday and Saturday and Chris Osiensky placed third in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:36.17. Palmer also won the 1,600-meter relay at Saturday’s Palmer Relays, and the Moose even showed their throwers have some speed, winning the weight-men’s relay.

“We really like, as a coaching staff, where we are right now,” Papowski said. “We feel pretty good that the kids are starting to peak right now. That’s what we wanted.”

Another competitor who’s starting to peak at the right time is Wasilla’s Devon Teeling, who threw a personal best 46-1.5 in the shot put on Friday, only to follow that up with another best of 47-3 on Saturday. While pleased with the progress, Teeling said he has better throws in him.

Friday was “right where my PR was at the last meet, so I’m OK with that,” he said. “I’d like to hit 50 by state.”

Although the Wasilla boys aren’t as deep at the girls team, Howell made a pleasant discovery over the weekend. He took four triple jumpers — Tyler Anderson, Ryan Tracy, Michael Johnston and AJ Marshall — and put them together as an 800-meter relay team. All they did was finish third in Fridays invite and post the region’s best time of the year at 1:37.03.

“We just threw those guys in a 4x2 relay — a bunch of triple jumpers — who ran the fastest time in the region. They have long legs and were boogieing around the track.”
