FAIRBANKS — The Palmer boys recorded the Valley’s top showing Thursday at the ASAA State High School Cross Country Skiing Championships, finishing seventh overall. Service won the boys’ competition, while Colony placed 13th and Wasilla 16th.

Leading the way for Valley skiers at the Jim Whisenhant Trails at Birch Hill Recreation Area in Fairbanks was Palmer’s Schyler Knopp, who crossed the finish line 18th in the field of 120 racers. Abe Meyerhofer was Colony’s top finisher in 22nd, and Connor Mattson was first for Wasilla in 30th place.

For the girls, South Anchorage took the top team trophy, while Valley schools Colony and Palmer finished 12th and 13th respectively — with only a half-second separating the rival teams.

Abby Jahn was the top Valley girl across the finish line in 31st place, while Hanna Smith (40) and Meagan Lynn (53) led the Moose girls in the field of 110 racers. For Wasilla, Natasha Vinzant is the only Warrior on the official score sheet, finishing No. 99.
