Valley teams dominate NLC semifinals

KENAI — Tournament organizers needed a coin flip to separate Wasilla and Colony in the standings. Saturday, the Warriors and Knights will settle things on the court.

After wins in the semifinal round Friday, Wasilla and Colony, both 9-1 during the regular season, will meet in the boys’ title game of the Northern Lights Conference Championships, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Kenai Central. Wasilla and Colony will also meet in the girls’ championship game, scheduled for 5:15 p.m.

Cameron Brown scored a game-high 17 points for top-seeded Wasilla during a 47-30 win over Palmer in the semifinals Friday. Alex Baham added 13.

Clayton Southwick led Palmer with seven points.

Colony used big starts to each half to score a 65-48 win over Soldotna in the other semifinal. Tucker Looney scored 23 for Colony.

Palmer will face Soldotna in the third-place game at noon Saturday.

In girls’ action, top-seed Wasilla used a 10-1 first quarter run to grab a 40-18 win over host Kenai in the semifinals. Leya DePriest led Wasilla with 12 points.

Second-seeded Colony also had a big first quarter in a 52-35 win over third-seeded Kodiak. The Knights scored 19 points in the first quarter. Faith Farris scored 18 for Colony.

In other action, the Palmer girls closed their season with a 56-44 loss to Soldotna.
