HOUSTON — A Valley team finally had the chance to celebrate opening day Thursday.

Soldotna edged Houston 8-5 to lead off what should be a long weekend of prep baseball in the Valley, a weekend local coaches and players have been hoping for, for weeks.

Houston and Wasilla will be the home of weekend baseball. After spending more than six hours Wednesday evening trying to pump standing water from Palmer Senior Field, Palmer head coach Dave Combs is simply anxious to give his players an opportunity to take a field, any field.

“It’s frustrating watching my seniors, watching games get cancelled, watching their season disappear,” Combs said.

Palmer’s season was supposed to start April 25 with a doubleheader in Anchorage. Instead, the Moose will begin their 2013 campaign against Soldotna at Houston High. Palmer will face Kenai Saturday at 3 p.m. in Houston.

Houston will host Kenai today at 4 p.m. and Soldotna on Saturday.

Wasilla will make its home debut tonight, hosting Kodiak at 7 p.m. The Bears will play Homer today at 1 p.m. at the Wasilla Senior Field.
