ANCHORAGE — Valley teams finished 1-2 during the first day of the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout at Dimond High School Wednesday.
Wasilla, Palmer and Colony were among 16 teams invited to the event, which continues Thursday at DHS. Wasilla was the lone Valley team to come away with a win Wednesday. The Warriors survived a late South rally to beat the Wolverines 60-52 and move into the Shootout’s gold bracket.
Amanda Hutchins led the Warriors with 10 points in the victory. Cassidy Edwards and McKenna Dinkel also contributed to the well-rounded scoring attack with nine points each. Dinkel also finished with a game-high 15 rebounds.
After taking a 33-29 lead into halftime, Wasilla extended its lead to 16 points with a 17-5 third-quarter run. South scored 18 during the final quarter in an attempt to get back into the game.
The Warriors open gold bracket play against West Anchorage Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Dimond.
Thunder Mountain used a 12-point first quarter to edge Palmer 33-32. The Falcons led by as many as nine points in the win, but Palmer outscored Thunder Mountain 17-14 in the second half.
The Moose also outrebounded the Falcons 41-26. Both teams shot less than 33 percent in the game.
Leya DePriest led Palmer with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Carly Venzke added 11 points and Kalei DePriest pulled down 10 rebounds.
Led by the monster effort from center Ruthy Hebard, West Valley scored a 61-42 win over Colony Wednesday. Hebard finished with 29 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in the win.
Izzy Tweed led Colony with 12.
Both Palmer and Colony move into the Shootout’s maroon bracket with first-day losses. Colony plays Bartlett at 2:30 p.m. Palmer plays Lathrop at 6:15 p.m.
