MAT-SU — A trio of Mat-Su Valley teams are ranked in the top 2 of their respective classes, according to the first Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Poll of the 2011-12 season.
Defending state champion Wasilla is ranked No. 1 in the 4A girls class in the poll, released Wednesday by AABC. Palmer is second in the 4A girls class.
Both Wasilla and Palmer earned tournament titles in December. Wasilla won the Doc Larson’s Roundball Classic at Wasilla High, and Palmer won the WYBT Holiday Classic in Kona, Hawaii, last week.
In the 4A boys class, Wasilla is ranked second behind first-ranked Service.
The poll includes votes from coaches across the state, and will be released weekly by AABC.
4A Boys:
1. Service; 2. Wasilla; 3. Juneau-Douglas; 4. Dimond; 5. Bartlett.
4A Girls:
1. Wasilla; 2. Palmer; 3. West Valley; 4. Colony; 5. Soldotna.
3A Boys:
1. Monroe Catholic; 2. Anchorage Christian School; 3. Barrow; 4. Sitka; 5. Delta.
3A Girls:
1. Barrow; 2. Sitka; 3. Galena; 4. Anchorage Christian School; 5. Mt. Edgecumbe.
2A Boys:
