Valley teams sweep Soldotna, Hawks win on the road

The Palmer Moose capped the regular season with a varsity sweep of the Soldotna Stars Saturday afternoon at Palmer High School, Palmer scored a 58-31 girls basketball win over Soldotna, and the Moose boys edged the Stars 57-56.

Kylie Henry and Kinzey Hutchings led Palmer with 12 points each to lead the Moose girls. Paige Marshall added nine and Grace Pickett chipped in nine. The Moose opened the game on a 11-4 run and closed the win by outscoring SoHi 18-8 in the fourth.

Shea Halbert and Tyler Hansen led the Palmer boys with 11 points each. Hansen hit a trio of three’s during Palmer’s 17-point first quarter.SoHi scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, but the Moose held on for the win.

Warriors sweep SoHiBella Hays scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Wasilla girls to a 45-34 win over the Soldotna Stars Friday at Wasilla High School.

Hays finished with 10 field goals in the game. She scored 10 of Wasilla’s 19 first-quarter points. Megan Alley hit Wasilla’s lone three-pointer and added eight points in the win.

The Wasilla boys beat Soldotna 52-32. Payson White and Arthur Adams scored a team-high 12 points each. Adams hit four three-pointers in the win. Andrew Devine added 11. Soldotna opened the game with a 16-8 lead, but was held to just a field goal in the second quarter. The Warriors outscored Soldotna 25-14 in the second half.

Houston boys win in the InteriorHayden Howard scored 22 points to lead the Houston Hawks to a 60-31 boys basketball win over North Pole Saturday at North Pole.

Howard shot 8 of 18 from the field, and hit a trio of three-pointers. He also added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Braden Cork scored 16 for the Hawks. Hunter Jefferson led Houston with 10 rebounds.

The Hawks led North Pole 16-6 early and held the Patriots to single digit scoring in all four quarters.

Houston finished 3-0 during its three days in North Pole. The Hawks beat Galena 57-46 on Friday. Cork led Houston with 26 points on 11 of 18 shooting,. Her added eight rebounds. Howard and Jefferson finished with seven points each.

The Hawks scored a 73-42 win over Delta Thursday night. Four Hawks scored in double digits. Howard and Cole Taylor scored 16 points each. Cork and Cody Wyrick finished with 10 points each. Taylor and Cork both hit a trio of three-pointers.

The North Pole girls beat Houston 55-37 on Saturday. Anna Whitted scored nine for the Hawks.

The Houston girls scored a 56-33 win over Galena on Friday. Whitted led Houston with 14 points, eight assists, seven steals and six rebounds. Kate Bredberg added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Colony boys get past PalmerColony scored a 68-55 win over Palmer Friday at Palmer High School.

Patrick McMahon led Colony with 21 points in the win. Jeremiah Hersrud hit four three-pointers and added 16. Jace Underwood scored 13.

Gavin O’Brien led Palmer with 14. Elijah Barnes added nine.

Knights sweep SoldotnaIt started as a battle between a pair of Northern Lights Conference rivals and turned into a three-point contest.

Colony and Soldotna combined for 26 three-pointers during the Knights 72-48 boys basketball win over the Stars Thursday night at Colony High School,

Colony’s Jeremiah Hersrud hit seven threes in the win and scored a game-high 27 points. The senior hit a pair of threes in each of the first three quarters, and scored 10 of Colony’s 24 first-quarter points. Jace Underwood added six three-pointers, scoring all 18 of his points from beyond the arc. Blake Dinkel, Kash Luce and Evan Gatton also hit a three-pointer in the win.

Jakob Brown led SoHi with four three-pointers and a team-high 12 points. Soldotna’s Nate Johnson and Ethan Sewell added 11 each.

Colony jumped to a 24-6 lead early, and closed the game with a 20-point fourth quarter.

The Colony girls used a big second half to get past Soldotna 39-26. The Knights outscored Soldotna 19-8 during the final two quarters.
