WASILLA — Mat-Su Borough School District students swept the Alaska State Science Olympiad competition March 30 in the Conoco-Phillips building at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Winning top honors in the high school contest was Mat-Su Career and Technical High School Team A. Colony High School’s team finished second.

On the middle school side of the contest, Teeland Middle School’s Team A finished in first place and Palmer Junior Middle School’s team finished third.

The top teams go on to compete in the national meet May 17-18 at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio.

District schools competing in this year’s Alaska State Science Olympiad were students from Mat-Su Career and Technical High School, Colony High School, Wasilla High School, American Charter Academy, Teeland Middle School, Palmer Junior Middle School and Colony Middle School.

Career and Technical High School teacher Tim Lundt is the Alaska State Coordinator, and said he expected CTHS teams would do well again this year. In advance of this past weekend’s meeting of minds, Lundt predicted a strong finish.

“My students are primed to be in the top 10 and I will be surprised if they don’t go to nationals,” he said. “I have the best builders in the nation.”

The state event is a culmination of yearlong research and work by students in Alaska in the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.
