Valley volleyball teams impress with weekend match victories

Palmer battles Kodiak

Palmer hosted Kodiak Friday night in a classic battle in which it took the teams nearly three hours to complete five games.

Palmer took the match by scores of 15-6, 9-15, 15-12, 11-15, and 19-17.

Each team's powerful middle hitters controlled play at the net all night. Palmer's Emily Sakis and Kodiak's Libby Rietz continually stuffed each other at the net and pleased the crowd with hard-pounding kills.

Emily Sakis had 20 kills, 13 digs, and served 11 aces in the match.

Emily Mounce poured in 19 kills and 14 digs.

Amy Jo Bowen, a senior transfer from Cordova, added great passing and defense along with nine kills.

Palmer setter Bree Johnson led all players with 44 assists.

"A great match," said Palmer head coach Steve Reynolds, "the kind of match that reminds me why I love volleyball."

Palmer traveled to Bartlett Saturday and quickly set them down in three games by scores of 15-11, 15-1, and 15-11.

Colony splits matches

Colony took Bartlett in three games Sept. 6 at Colony. Colony won by scores of 15-7, 15-7, and 15-2. Stephanie Deml had 10 kills and setter Zeenie Preston added 12 assists.

Colony lost to Kodiak Sunday in four games, with scores of 13-15, 6-15, 16-14, and 11-15.

Middle hitter Stephanie Deml played her best game of the season with 20 kills and five aces. Lindsey Krupa contributed 14 kills. Junior setter Zeenie Preston racked up 39 assists.

Wasilla handles Homer

Wasilla wasted no time in defeating Homer Saturday. Wasilla won with scores of 15-1, 15-5, 15-8.

Caitlin Fisher had 11 kills and served five aces. Lacey Adcock had 10 kills and six digs. Amanda Gehring contributed 12 assists in the match.
