WASILLA — Asked what it takes to dominate the Best of the Valley’s sandwich category year after year, Bob Suders of Krazy Moose Subs gives a concise answer.
“I guess consistency,” he said, noting that when a menu remains consistent, customers know what to expect coming in. “I hope they know or hope we don’t disappoint them.”
Asked if Krazy Moose had changed its menu at all since he won best sandwich last year, Suders paused for a second.
“If we did it wasn’t very much,” he said.
Which, of course, is what you want from a good lunch restaurant. Lunch is Krazy Moose’s busiest time. Customers are coming in with only an hour to spare and not a lot of time to process a new menu or consider a myriad of unfamiliar options.
“We try to keep it simple,” he said.
Of course, the menu has unorthodox sandwiches — buffalo chicken subs and cheeseburger subs — but Suders said it’s the old standbys that are most popular.
“We do a lot of cheesesteaks,” he said. “We do Italians, a lot of Italian subs. We do a lot of salads, a lot of salads, a lot of wraps.”
Krazy Moose passed its four-year anniversary in March and has been in its current location for a little more than two of those years. The building is almost a museum, having been built as Teeland’s Country Store in 1917.
The interior features historic artifacts and pictures on the walls. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and is a stop on tours of the area. In short, it’s a pretty significant piece of Wasilla’s history.
“We were kind of scared to move into it, but it’s been a good move,” Suders said.
Suders said he doesn’t have any plans to go anywhere or do anything else. The sandwich business has been good to him — but that’s not to say it’s not demanding.
“It’s a lot of work, a lot of hard work, a lot of hours,” he said.
