Vehicle hits guy wire, thousands lose power

MEADOW LAKES — More than 2,000 Matanuska Electric Association customers were left in the dark Tuesday evening after a vehicle hit a guy wire on a power pole at the intersection of the Parks Highway and Pittman Road.

“The collision was not with a pole itself, but with a guy wire, which came loose and flipped up into the phase wire,” said MEA spokeswoman Cheryll Heinze. “This resulted in equipment damage and resulted in an outage for 2,152 customers in the Meadow Lakes area.”

The vehicle that struck the wire, which resulted in the outage, left the scene, she said.

While the incident that led to the power outage happened around 7:30 p.m., and power was restored by 11:30 p.m., Tuesday, Heinze said.
