‘Velveteen Rabbit’ opens November 28 at VPA

WASILLA — Kelly Larson will direct a performance of “The Story of the Velveteen Rabbit,” Nov. 28 through Dec. 21 at the Valley Performing Arts, 251 W. Swanson Ave., Wasilla.

The theater group promises this musical “will touch your heart and remain forever in your sweet memories.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the plot, it starts in a child’s nursery. When the lights go out in the nursery the magic begins — the Velveteen Rabbit and all of the toys spring to life. With narration by the grandfatherly Skin Horse, the main character is the eponymous Velveteen Rabbit, who learns about love when he gains the affection of the young boy. Andrew and Rabbit are inseparable until the boy comes down with scarlet fever and the doctor proclaims that the germ-ridden toy must be destroyed. Luckily, Rabbit escapes and finds himself among the wild rabbits and the beautiful nursery magic fairy.

“With a Victorian flavor, this fun and heart-warming musical creatively captures the magic of the original story about a stuffed animal made real by a child’s love,” Valley Performing Arts proclaims.

Ticket prices are $18 for students/seniors and $20 for adults. For more information, contact 373-0195, or visit valleyperformingarts.org. You can also purchase tickets at the office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
