Veterans Day attendance was down, but ceremony was nice

To the editor:

I went to the Veterans Day service at the Mat-Su Visitors Center again this year. Unhappily, it seems to be getting less well attended each year, but it still is a nice ceremony.

I still am disappointed that the chaplain and other active duty personnel showed up in fatigues rather than a Class A uniform. (In my day, fatigues weren’t worn off base or post except to travel to and from post. If one lives off post, I think it shows some disrespect for the occasion). Wearing flag hats, caps, scarves, jackets, etc. is something I find disrespectful, too. Given Sen. Charlie Huggins’ military background, his flag baseball cap was especially disrespectful.

But all in all, it was a nice ceremony and with good weather I expected more interest this year. Anyway, thanks to the organizations for making it possible.
