Veterans' Day event set forWall of Honor

WASILLA -- The Veterans' Wall of Honor is where this year's community Veteran's Day appreciation service is being held.

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski will attend the service, organizers said, which is at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. The service, like many across the nation, honors veterans for their service to the country.

"When you talked about heroes when I was growing up, it was the people coming home from World War II. There was a sense of patriotism back then and you got behind it," said Barry Perkins, one of this year's organizers. "And then we got away from that. Now, with everything going on in Iraq, I think you're seeing that patriotism coming back a little."

The veterans groups will be represented at the ceremony, and several speakers are scheduled, including Leo Kaye, who will speak about the War Dog Memorial project, and a representative from the Veterans Affairs office , who will read a proclamation. Other vet organizations will also be represented during the ceremony.

The Wasilla High School band, which was recently invited to go to Normandy to perform, will be providing the music.

There will be a U.S. Air Force flyover around 11:15 a.m., Perkins said.

"As you know, we've got a lot of veterans here, and a lot of really decorated veterans at that," Perkins said.
