BYERS LAKE — Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation sponsored en plein-air painting event Aug. 26-28 at Byers Lake in Denali State Park to create and be inspired by nature and its grandeur.
Ben Ellis, director of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation of the state Department of Natural Resources, was instrumental in the project. David Griffin, natural resource specialist, coordinated the event with the help of art organizations in the state.
Pat Bliss, Nancy Crawford, Jim Leach and Karen Mattson, executive board members of Valley Fine Arts Association, and member Romie Deschamps were among more than 40 artists from Homer, Anchorage, Willow and Fairbanks in attendance.
Guided hikes and children’s art activities also were offered.
Dan Sullivan, commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources said, “Our goal is to make our state park system the pride of all Alaskans. This new family friendly arts program is a great opportunity to be outdoors in Denali country and participate in unique activities at the state park.”
Joining Sullivan was Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, and both attended a potluck dinner at the art tent and the show featuring art produced by artists during the three-day affair.
Ellis said more en plein-air art events are planned around the state for next year, including possible events in Kodiak, Fairbanks and Eklutna state parks
