In a recent conversation I had with a friend, I learned of a need for some deployed soldiers. The need was for 200 sets of 100-percent cotton long underwear for a group of gunners.
Our military provides excellent gear for staying warm; however, state-of-the-art garments are made with some synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers can melt to skin if you are hit by an IED.
After visiting with Command Sgt. Maj. Feaster and learning of the need, I called my friend from the Wasilla Veterans of Foreign Wars, John Minnick. I expressed the need to him and in less than 48 hours I was holding 150 pieces of 100-percent cotton long underwear.
The garments have been delivered to the armory and will be shipped by the Alaska Army National Guard to ensure they reach their destination quickly.
On behalf of the receiving soldiers, I want to thank the members of the VFW for taking such prompt action and filling a need so quickly. I have always valued your military service and appreciated the freedom you have provided. Now I appreciate your community service that perfectly supports our serving soldiers. Perhaps I should not be surprised by your actions. After all, you know what it is to serve in the trenches. You have walked in similar boots.
On behalf of the soldiers who will receive your gift, thank you.
