PALMER — A candlelight vigil for 16-year old David Grunwald will take place at the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer tonight starting at 6 p.m.
Gina Spangler, a Grunwald family friend who helped organize the event, said people wanted to plan something like this even before word came of the Palmer youth's killing. Ever since the State Medical Examiner's office confirmed the body discovered Dec. 2 in a remote area off Knik River Road was Grunwald, Spangler said there has been an outpouring of support for the family.
"I had a lady from Sitka call this morning. I've even gotten a call from the (United Kingdom)," Spangler said Thursday afternoon. "We all try to be as diligent of a parent as we can."
Spangler said the vigil has been moved to the large, white tent at the Borealis Theater. She said there will be limited seating for those needing it as well as hot chocolate. She said David's parents, Ben and Edie Grunwald, have requested this be a time for the community to come together and begin the healing process through fellowship, support and prayer.
Spangler said the informal setting will feature several speakers. Included are staff and administrators from Mat-Su Career Tech High School where Grunwald attended, his girlfriend Victoria Mokelke, friends and family members.
"Pastors from many denominations all throughout the Mat-Su will be there. We're not trying to make this a religious event, but they will be there if someone needs to talk," Spangler said.
Spangler said there are business and individual support has been overwhelming. Everyone from State Fair officials, to stores donating supplies to individuals donating time and equipment has meant a lot to those close to David.
"We will have a large, heated tent for the ceremony. But please dress warmly and be prepared to stand," Spangler said.
Those wishing to attend should enter through the purple gate. Anyone with questions may contact Spangler at 907-315-2043.
Sixteen-year old Erick Almandinger of Palmer is being charged as an adult in case. He remains jailed on first-degree murder and kidnapping charges. Police state others involved in the incident have been identified but not yet charged.
