VIRGINIA CLAYTOR MANNING

Virginia Claytor Manning, 83, died Oct. 11, 2003, at her home in Rolling Green Village, Greenville, S.C.

She was born March 9, 1920, in Hopkins, S.C., a daughter of the Rev. Edward McCrady Claytor and Virginia Dreher Claytor.

She graduated from Lower Richland High School, attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., and received a degree from Roper Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, S.C. She was employed as a registered nurse for many years and her gentle nature brought comfort to many people. She was also a gifted artist and talented musician, who played the organ for untold Episcopal services, weekly Vespers, and sing-a-longs at Rolling Green Village in Evergreen Unit.

Mrs. Manning was a life-long active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Congaree, S.C., and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was married for 60 years to Gerald Guy Edward Manning, who survives her along with her sons and daughters-in-law, G. G. Edward Manning II and Brenda of Wasilla, and Duane and Corinne Manning of Greenville; sisters Helen Claytor Tolhurst of Rutherfordton, N.C. and Lucy Claytor Davis of Wadesboro, N.C.

She is also survived by grandchildren G. Edward Manning III of Portland, Ore., Edward Coke Mann of Columbia, S.C., Jacob Chapman Mann and his wife Elizabeth, Mary Claytor Rasor, Sophie Flar Manning, Isabel Clarkson Manning all of Greenville; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her daughter Marguerite Manning Rasor of Greenville and her two brothers Wilfred Rivers Claytor and Samuel Barton Claytor.

A memorial service was held Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Fund: 1151 Elm Savannah Road., Hopkins, SC 29061.

Inurnment was held Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Congaree, S.C.
