Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Vivian Mildred (Lindquist) Smith was born on Dec. 1, 1911, in Foster township, Fairbault County, Walter, Minn., to Victor and Amanda (Martinson) Lindquist. She was baptized July 14, 1912, in Mansfield's Lutheran Church in Minnesota. When she was 2 years old her family moved to Princeton where she grew up on a farm. She was confirmed Aug. 14, 1927, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Princeton.
She attended school in Baldwin township and graduated from Princeton High School in 1929. She married Alwyn Smith on March 9, 1930. She lived in Princeton until 1932. In 1940 they moved to Alaska.
Mrs. Smith was a lifetime member of the Pioneers of Alaska, the International Clerks Union, the IGLOO Club, a Red Cross volunteer, and a Sunday school teacher and director. She enjoyed traveling and later in life crocheting, which won her numerous ribbons at the Alaska State Fair. She loved visiting with family and friends, and was recently vacationing in Minnesota with family.
She is survived by her son Robert Smith and wife Audrey of Mora, Minn.; daughter Muriel Cotter of Palmer; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren, with two on the way; brother Roy Lindquist of Princeton, Minn.; sister Phyllis Nyberg of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; and many other friends and relatives. She is preceded in death by Alwyn Smith; her son Richard Smith; daughter-in-law Bobbie, grandson Lincoln, granddaughter Terri; and one brother, one sister, and son-in-law Herman Cotter.
She died Jan. 24, 2004, at Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids, Minn., at the age of 92.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Protestant Church of a Thousand Trees, Located at 713 Denali St. in Palmer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
