The holiday season is in full swing, and as the countdown to Christmas begins, many gift-givers are turning their attention to the time-consuming, sometimes frustrating, yet cherished tradition of gift wrapping. Beyond the tinsel and bows, the act of wrapping presents serves as a creative expression and an important part of the overall gifting experience, building anticipation for the lucky recipient.

However, there is help for those gift-givers that may not have time, patience, or the ability to wrap, and as a bonus, can benefit the homeless. It’s all part of “It’s A Wrap” gift wrapping.

Located inside the Wasilla Clock Tower, volunteers armed with wrapping paper, boxes, tape, and miles of patience are available to help shoppers with wrapping gifts purchased at the tower, or brought from home.

“I like wrapping presents, so this is something I enjoy volunteering to do,” said volunteer wrapper Kim Burke, who has been helping shoppers and gift-givers wrap their presents for four years.

Though there is no fee, shoppers can make donations for the gift wrapping, with 100% of the donations helping the homeless in the Mat-Su through the Wasilla Homeless Committee (WHC). The annual fundraiser is a vital fundraiser for the nonprofit. “We rely on donations to continue our work. Our annual ‘It's A Wrap’ fundraiser is a crucial part of our efforts,” says Laurie Phillips of the WHC.

“I enjoy it. It’s a good way to help out the homeless committee and also help out the people with their presents,” said fellow volunteer Riley Lofland.

Phillips says this is the 10th year for the fundraiser, and that the proceeds will go towards providing vital services to those in need, including housing assistance, food, clothing, IDs, and much more, and as the wind and bitter cold temperatures continue, the services are needed more than ever.

“Living on the streets is never ideal, but it is happening here and now, with more people than you know- even families with children. The weather we are experiencing brings huge challenges to those on the streets and exposure to these temperatures and wind chill can have devastating results. Please consider donating to keep someone safe and warm during this Christmas season.”

One shopper, Fawn, was grateful for the service as she was a last-minute shopper for a White Elephant gift exchange for a holiday party and needed her gifts wrapped. “I absolutely love this!”

“It’s A Wrap” will be at the Wasilla Clock Tower every day from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., including Christmas Eve. For those who have already wrapped their presents but would still like to contribute, they can still make a donation at the Clock Tower.

“We're proud to be part of a network of nonprofits working to end homelessness and provide essential services to those affected. We believe that no one should be homeless, and we're committed to making a difference in our community.”
