Voters approve no-smoking initiative by wide margin

To the editor:

While I appreciate the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman’s coverage of our local elections, it’s worth noting that the results the newspaper reported for Palmer’s no-smoking ordinance, Proposition 3, have been inaccurate from the start.

According to the city of Palmer website, unofficial results posted on election night showed Prop. 3 ahead by a margin of 61.5 percent to 38.5 percent, with 452 “yes” votes and 283 “no” votes.

The official results, after absentee, early and questioned ballots were tallied, show Prop. 3 passed by a margin of 60.5 percent to 39.5 percent, with 493 “yes” votes to 322 “no” votes.

This is a clear, decisive win for healthy, smoke-free air in Palmer. If a political candidate were to win by that wide a margin, he or she would declare victory by a landslide.
