WASILLA — Valley Performing Arts Center is putting on its final production of the season, “Aida,” a musical about star-crossed lovers from feuding nations.

“I think it’s a good one to close with. I can’t wait for people to see it. The music in it is very special,” “Aida” director Grant Olson said.

“Aida” is a Disney-produced musical that’s based on Giuseppe Verdi’s 19th-century opera of the same name. It features music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice.

Olson said this is his first time directing this musical with VPA, and he previously put on a production at Palmer High School. He said that he’s looking forward to putting on a quality show with a dedicated cast and crew at his side.

“It’s been a joy to work with this cast,” Olson said.

Olson is a longtime member of VPA and an active member of the Valley’s theater community. He said that he’s had a lot of fun working on a lot of plays over the years. He said that pulling something of that scale together is a thrilling opportunity that he enjoys sharing with others.

“it’s always a challenge and it also manages to work out. I like challenges and VPA has afforded me that,” Olson said.

This was VPA’s first full season since the start of the pandemic. VPA Executive Director Garry Forrester said they’ve had an effective return to live theater and they’re getting people back into the habit of coming out for local entertainment again.

“I’d say our season has been pretty successful,” Forrester said.

Forrester said that Aida is a great musical with a great message and helps them wrap up the season on a high note.

“I’m glad we get to have a musical at the end of the season. Musicals are some of the things we do best,” Forrester said.

Forrester said that he was grateful for the continued support of their staff and volunteers. He said their dedication will help them move forward with a reunited community.

“This really was a team effort,” Forrester said. “The dark days of not being able to be together for live performances are hopefully over.”

“Aida” opens April 22 and runs through May 15.
