WASILLA — Valley Performing Arts is premiering a local adaptation of the timeless holiday classic, 'A Christmas Story' Friday, Nov. 24.

According to director Joe Myers, tickets for the opening night have already sold out.

"There's a lot of anticipation for the show," Myers said. "I know 100 percent that we're going to deliver what the people are looking for."

"A Christmas Story" follows the story of a young boy named Ralphie who wants a Red Rider BB gun more than anything for Christmas. Ralph along with his colorful cast family and friends have made their way into the homes of millions of Americans since the movie was released in 1983 and their classic lines are quoted often, particularly during the holiday season as households across the country watch and rewatch the film.

"I think it definitely plays a quintessential part in many Americans' lives," Myers said. "It's really a heartfelt piece that settles well with the whole idea of Christmas… to share love with our loved ones."

"A Christmas Story" has been adapted into a musical and performed at various stages across the U.S. Myers said that VPA had the ability to add some of their own changes to the musical while keeping it to true to its core. He noted they're also utilizing tracks recorded by a band from the lower 48 along with live piano performances by Sam Krauser playing in the background.

"It's truly VPA's close to home piece," Myers said. "It's quite phenomenal."

Myers has directed several VPA productions but this is his first time directing a musical. He said it's been a great experience that he's thoroughly enjoyed.

"It's been nothing short of a thrill directing this show," Myers said.

Myers thanked his dedicated cast and crew members for putting in so much hard work preparing for this production.

'They turned it into something truly amazing," Myers said. No matter what, when people come, they're going to get a fantastic show."

"A Christmas Story" runs for four weekends.
