WASILLA — Valley Performing Arts volunteers of all ages busily preparing for the opening night their location rendition of the classic holiday musical, “Babes in Toyland.”

“This is a great family show. There’s lots of things in this show for people to enjoy,” VPA Executive Director Garry Forrester said.

Forrester is co-directing “Babes in Toyland” with first time director Jeff Winell.

Forrester has directed numerous VPA productions in the past but the most recent was Mouse Trap in 2019. He said this is his fourth musical and it feels good getting back into the ebb and flow of bringing a cast and crew together with mutual goals in mind, having fun and putting on the best show they can.

“For me, it’s fun being in a show and it’s also fun to direct a show and see what you thought about come to be and have people share your vision,” Forrester said. “We wouldn’t be able to do anything without our volunteers.”

“Babes in Toyland’ features a particularly large cast and crew of nearly 80 total volunteers from all walks of life, from novice actors looking to gain experience to seasoned VPA veterans supporting the next generation of community actors.

“They got along so well and they have so much fun together. It’s just such a great feeling to see that,” Winell said.

This show also features many young children from across the Mat-Su Valley taking on singing and acting roles.

Winell said that he was really impressed with how well the various young actors stepped into their roles and learned all the songs.

“They caught on so quickly. They’re so talented,” Winell said. “These kids are having fun and they’re going to want to come back.”

This is Winell’s first time in the director’s chair, but he’s no stranger to VPA. He performed in productions such as “Miracle on 34th Street’’ and “White Christmas.” He said that he recently became a board member, and he appreciates the welcoming environment that fosters personal growth and camaraderie.

“It’s such a caring community. When you step into a VPA production you become a part of something bigger. You just feel appreciated. You feel like you’re part of something special,” Winell said.

“Babes in Toyland” premiers Nov. 25 and runs through Dec. 18. General admission is $20 and $18 for seniors and students.
