WASILLA — Valley Performing Arts is starting off season 47 with a local adaption of “Dearly Departed,” a comedy about a dysfunctional family that goes to a funeral.
“It’s a family that puts the fun in dysfunctional,” cast member Jeanine Galitz said. “At the heart of it, it’s all about family coming together in a time of tragedy.”
Director Joe Myers said they stretched out rehearsals over the course of the summer so everyone could enjoy the short season. He said that he’s eager to unveil all the hard work his cast and crew put into this play.
“I’m feeling fantastic,” Myers said. “We’re actually show-ready now and they’re itching for an audience. “I’m just exalted to show what we created. It’s kind of an honor to be able to open up the season.”
Galitz said they’ve had a hard time keeping themselves from busting into laughter during rehearsals. She said the cast and crew’s journey of becoming a tight-knit group mirrors the story they’re bringing to life on stage. She said that’s common for any production, but this one will be an especially enjoyable memory to look back on.
“We have way too much fun,” Galitz said. “By the second or third night, you’re all just one big family.”
Myers said that VPA is a very welcoming environment, and they’re always looking for new members.
“If you’ve ever been interested in theater, come on in,” Myers said.
VPA is presenting “Dearly Departed” Sept. 16 through Oct. 2. For more information, visit valleyperformingarts.org.
