The Alaska Avalanche Information Center, a not-for-profit organization operated by a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers, is proud to announce their receipt of a community grant from the Walmart Foundation to support Emergency Preparedness Safety for the Mat-Su Valley.
Disasters and emergencies happen every day. In order to help prepare our community, the Walmart Foundation has donated $500 toward the annual Mat-Su Emergency Expo and Safety Fair to be held at the Mat-Su Community College on Saturday, September 19th from 11am to 3pm.
Funds from this grant will be used to support the Avalanche Disaster Experience. This program provides a hands-on opportunity for community residents to not just talk about avalanches, but actually experience one through this live, interactive show.
Do you live, travel, work or recreate in mountain terrain? Do you know what to look for in order to avoid an avalanche? Would you know how to respond if you or someone you know were caught in a snow slide? This is your opportunity to find out and practice skills to ensure you are prepared.
This free annual event will include more than 50 different exhibits including the Disaster Experience which will feature three different experiences; avalanches presented by AAIC, boating presented by Alaska Safe Boating, and emergency medical presented by the North America Outdoor Institute.
You can also enjoy lunch which will be provided at no cost by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
We encourage you to take the time to bring your friends and family to this National Emergency Preparedness event to ensure you have the supplies and skills needed to respond and survive a disaster or emergency.
