Warrior girls continue domination

The Wasilla Warriors girls' basketball team overwhelmed the Colony Knights 60-29 at Colony Friday in a game that was never close.

The Warriors used a tenacious half-court press to control much of the game as they built a 32-14 half-time lead. The fourth-ranked Wasilla team finished the season with an 18-2 regular-season record, including two wins over Bartlett and Dimond. Wasilla's only two losses came at the hands of Lathrop and Chugiak. With the loss, the Knights fell to 9-9 overall.

From the beginning of the game, the Knights were in trouble. Wasilla held them to just two points in the first quarter, a deficit Colony was never able to overcome.

Ten Warriors scored at least one basket in the contest, including Megan Stearman's game-high 14 points. Hillary Putnam added 12 for Wasilla. They were the only players to score in double digits.

Jamie Christensen scored eight points while leading the Knights in scoring. Sarah Welsh added five tallies for Colony. Colony struggles included going just 9-16 from the free-throw line.

The Valley teams will head for the Region III tournament in Soldotna tomorrow, where they will play games through Saturday to decide which schools will represent the Valley at the state championships at the end of the month.
