As local basketball squads move into the final week of the regular season, the Wasilla Warriors held strong to the top spot in the girls' 4A class in the latest Alaska Sportswriters Basketball Poll.
The Warrior women earned six first- place votes and 48 total points in the poll tabulated by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Wasilla (17-2 overall, 8-0 Region III) is eight points ahead of second-place Lathrop. Wasilla will look for the clean sweep of Region III competition as the test their undefeated league mark with a road contest with Palmer tonight and a home date with Colony Saturday.
The Colony girls earned four total points in the poll.
Palmer moved up to fourth in the 4A boys poll. The Moose, who had been ranked fifth in the class for the last several weeks, are now tied with East for the fourth spot. Palmer hosts Wasilla tonight and is looking to complete the 2003-04 season with a perfect 10-0 Region III record. Palmer is 17-5 overall.
Bartlett was a unanimous choice for the top spot in the boys 4A poll once again. After a win over third-ranked West on Tuesday, the Golden Bears are the undisputed regular season champions of Region IV.
