FAIRBANKS — Throughout the season, Wasilla head coach Gary Howell had a hunch his girls track and field team was on the verge of something special.

On Saturday, his Warriors celebrated something extraordinary.

Powered by Howell’s dominant dozen, Wasilla wowed the Alaska track and field world by reeling in the 2011 4A state girls title at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks. With only 12 athletes in Howell’s arsenal, the Warriors shot down heavily favored Dimond and beat the three-time defending state champions by 30 points.

Junior Morgan Dampier won a pair of state titles and shattered her own record in the 800 meters and sophomore Dejanae Harris successfully defended her title in the 100 to help Wasilla claim its first girls track and field state title in school history.

“We knew coming in we would have to have a stellar meet. We didn’t have any margin of error whatsoever,” Howell said by cellphone Saturday evening as the Warriors headed back to the Valley from the Interior. “This is a lot of hard work paid off. These kids have put a lot of time in the weight room, on the upper track (in the school) over the wintertime. These kids just have tremendous heart and refuse to go quiet into the night.”

Howell and the Warriors knew nearly everything would have to go Wasilla’s way if the team had any chance of hanging another banner in the WHS gym. Howell, an English teacher at Wasilla High, probably could not have scripted a better route through the two-day championships.

“Everyone did their part. Everyone did what they were expected to do or better,” said senior Brianne Bohn, who did her part with a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles and anchoring Wasilla’s fourth-place 800-relay squad. “Everything went as planned. We met our goal.”

Wasilla’s Saturday started with Harris and Dampier going 1-2 in the 100 meters. Harris, the defending state champion, ran a blistering 12.43 seconds, easily her personal best and the lowest time in the state this season.

“It’s way faster than she’s ever gone,” Howell said of Harris. “She was tremendous.”

Harris picked up a chunk of team points for the Warriors, also finishing second in the triple jump and third in the 200.

Dampier finished second in the 100 with a blazing 12.55. Take away Harris’ finish and that would be the top 100 time of the year. But Dampier’s work in that event can’t touch what she accomplished later in the day.

Dampier won state titles in the 400 and 800, and led the Warriors to a runner-up finish in the 1,600-meter relay. Winning both the 400 and 800 at the state meet was once an unthinkable feat, Howell said, but victorious in both, Dampier made history.

“What she did today is unprecedented,” Howell said. “This marks a moment in history.”

Howell said to win both events in such a short amount of time — both were staged within about 45 minutes Saturday — requires tremendous aerobic ability.

Dampier won the 400 with an impressive time of 57.43 and turned around to run a mind-boggling, record-breaking 2:10.42 in the 800. Dampier shattered her own state record by three seconds.

“The 400 and the 800 is definitely not a very nice combo,” Dampier said by cellphone Saturday. “I was surprised at how long we had (between races). It wasn’t as bad as I thought.”

The plan heading into the state meet, Dampier said, was to go for the record during the preliminary round. State records can only be set at the state championships, but not necessarily during the final. Poor weather on Friday forced Dampier to scratch those plans.

“It was too windy, almost Palmer windy,” Dampier said. “We decided not to go after it.”

But she got he record on Saturday, and hit the magic number of 2:10, a mark she’s had her sights set on.

“It’s the Division I qualifying time to make the team,” Dampier said. “It’s been my goal all season.”

Mandi Ringgenberg, Jessica Pahkala and Alyssa Hutchins helped Dampier and the Warriors finish second in the 1,600 relay. Ringgenberg, Pahkala, Hutchins and Mariah Burroughs ran to a second-place finish in the 3,200 relay. Burroughs was also second in the 3,200 run.

The state track title completes one heck of a year for the Wasilla running teams. Howell’s girls cross country running squad earned a 4A state title back in the fall.

“The cool part is the same group helped us with that cross country championship. Nine of the 12 girls ran cross,” Howell said.

Valley throwers

reach titles

Valley athletes earned three of the four 4A state titles in the throwing events over the weekend. On Friday, Palmer senior Erin LaMere upset defending champion Shellina Irwin of Colony to win the girls shot put.

LaMere, who spent her senior season just behind Irwin in the event, heaved the shot 35 feet, 10.75 inches to win her first title. Irwin fell just short at 35-6.

The top four throwers in the event hail from the Valley. Houston junior Savanna James finished third with a throw of 34-7.25 and Palmer junior Rachael Huffman was fourth at 34-4.

Irwin did get her second career state title on Saturday by winning the discus. The Colony senior used a toss of 118-01 to earn state gold.

Devon Teeling, the double-winner at the conference championships last week, won his first state title with a throw of 47-7 in the boys’ shot put. Teeling was also fourth in the discus.

Colony sophomore Audrey Michaelson earned an upset victory of her own on Friday. Michaelson beat her own personal record by more than 11 seconds en route to winning a state title in the 3,200. Michaelson clocked a time of 11:07.94 to win her first state crown. Michaelson beat favored Jaymi Bethea of Kodiak, who finished at 11:07.

In all six different Valley athletes earned 4A state titles.

Palmer senior Jim McCall led the fourth-place Moose with a pair of runner-up finishes. McCall, an NLC champ in three events last week, was second in the 100 and long jump. His time of 11.24 in the 100 is a personal best.

Palmer’s 3,200 relay team (Joe Day, Chris Osiensky, Ben King and Mason Minturn) also finished as a state runner-up. Minturn finished fourth in the 800.

Colony senior Anthony Bricker led the Knights boys with third-place finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles events.

In 1-2-3A action, Susitna Valley’s Nick Nysewander finished third in the 100 and 200.
