WASILLA — The Wasilla Warriors are merely seconds from holding an undefeated mark in the first three weeks of the regular season.
After surrendering the game-winning goal during the final minute of play during a season-opening loss to Colony last month, the Warriors have been on a roll, winners of three consecutive matches.
Even though Wasilla ran its streak to three straight with a 3-0 victory over Homer on Saturday, the Warriors don’t want to appear overconfident as they now prepare for an upcoming week that is stocked full of difficult competition.
“We’ve got a lot of tough games coming up,” Wasilla head coach Katie Broeder said after the win over the Mariners at Wasilla’s Veterans Memorial Field. “We’ve got Palmer on Monday and they’re always a tough rival.
“Kenai’s super tough,” Broeder said referring to the Warriors’ clash with Kenai Central slated for Friday on the Kenai Peninsula.
Homer, a team that has advanced to the state tournament in four of the last six seasons, is also no slouch.
Wasilla used a pair of Kendra Miner breakaway goals to build an early lead against the defending Northern Lights Conference champions.
Miner, a freshman who has scored in three of her first four matches at the high school level, knocked a shot into the upper left side of the net in the sixth minute to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Miner added to that advantage, beating the Homer keeper on a breakaway opportunity in the 37th minute.
Wasilla senior captain Randi Smith sent a hard shot into the back of the net from about 18 yards out during the 71st minute to give the Warriors the 3-0 lead.
Broeder credited Wasilla’s numerous offensive opportunities to her team’s passing up front.
While Wasilla was able to control much of the play in the second half, Broeder felt the NLC foes were evenly matched during the first 40 minutes.
When Homer was able to put together opportunities on the offensive end, the Wasilla defense — led by junior Tabor Tingstad — squashed the scoring chances.
Broeder also credited the play of junior keeper Sammy Becker.
“She earned her shutout,” Broeder said.
One of Becker’s biggest saves of the game came in the 78th minute.
Gillian Beran-Maryott, who posted the hat trick in a 3-0 win over Houston on Friday, tried to sneak a shot right underneath the crossbar, but Becker jumped to make the finger-tip grab.
Wasilla 3, Skyview 0
WASILLA — Freshman Kendra Miner scored in first minute to spark the
Wasilla Warriors in a 3-0 win over Skyview on Friday.
Freshman Ashlynn Frizzelle and sophomore Rachel Kennedy also scored for the Warriors.
Frizzelle gave WHS the 2-0 lead in the 12th minute, and Kennedy scored during the 65th minute.
