SOLDOTNA - Wasilla senior Hillarie Putnam was named the girls' Most Outstanding Athlete after she won two events and placed second in a third Friday and Saturday at the Region III Track Meet at Skyview High School in Soldotna.
Putnam placed first in the long jump and triple jump and finished second in the high jump. Putnam's jump of 17 feet, one inch in the long jump was the best in the state this season.
Colony's Ardrienna Everett also had a strong individual showing, winning the girls 300 meter hurdles and placing second to Putnam in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump.
Everett managed to win the hurdles after race favorite Denali Foldager of Seward was forced to withdraw after collapsing with exhaustion during the girls' 1,600-meter run. After winning, Everett said she was dedicating the victory to Foldager.
“This one's for Denali,” Everett told the Peninsula Clarion.
Everett said the win was bittersweet because her thoughts were with her friend and rival from Seward.
“It didn't feel like I should have even been running today because she's my main competition and I was looking forward to going in there and trying my best against. That way I can improve my time,” she said. “This one's for Denali because she collapsed in the mile. And she won state last year. And she's such a nice person. So, I ran that one for her.”
In the team race, the Colony girls and Palmer boys were the top Mat-Su finishers, each placing fourth in the 13-team meet, which is used to determine qualifiers for the state meet at West Valley.
Anchorage Christian won the girls title, while Kodiak placed first overall for the boys. The Wasilla girls were sixth, while Palmer's girls team placed 10th. For the boys, Colony wound up in fifth, while Wasilla was 10th.
Palmer's Devin Konkler was the top Mat-Su boys individual finisher, placing second to Soldotna's Kelly Seggerman in the 200 meter dash. Palmer also placed second and the 400- and 800-meter relays.
Palmer's Tremain Benton anchored the 800-meter team. Following the race, he said was happy with the team's performance.
“I'm proud of my relay team,” Benton said. “We did good.”
He said he believes the team - which has been among the top contenders statewide all season - has a chance to perform well at the state meet.
“I hope so,” he said.
The winner in each event automatically advances to the state meet, as do the next 10 best times and distances from region meets around the state. Region qualifiers will be announced later this week.
