NORTH POLE -- The Wasilla Warriors volleyball team won three matches at the North Pole Volleyball tournament this weekend to claim the title. The Warriors posted wins over Monroe Catholic, West Valley and Bartlett en route to earning to the tournament crown.
Wasilla not only won all three of their matches, but they swept each match 3-0. The defending state champions beat Monroe (15-9, 15-7, 16-14), West Valley (17-15, 15-12, 15-3) and Bartlett (15-5, 15-13, 15-10).
"We have been playing much better," Wasilla head coach Gary Steinfort said. "Our passing game continues to improve and our players are starting to work together much better."
Erika Lund, Caitlin Fisher and Lindsey Shogren were each named to the all-tournament team for the Warriors.
Fisher led Wasilla with 41 kills in the tournament. Shogren added 27 kills. Shogren and Lund each had 13 blocks.
Lund notched 11 of her 13 blocks against Monroe Catholic. Fisher posted double digits in kills in two of the three matches.
Valley foe Colony also competed in the toureny. The Knights finished fourth after losing to Bartlett in the losers bracket.
Palmer wins matches
The Moose posted wins over Dimond and Chugiak last week in non-conference action.
Palmer defeated Dimond (16-14, 15-10, 15-5). Emily Sakis led the club with 15 kills, six blocks and four aces. Setters Brianna Johnson and Jayme Irvine combined for 27 assists.
Palmer defeated Chugiak (15-1, 15-11, 15-6). Sakis continued to dominate with a team-high 14 kills.
