ANCHORAGE -- The Wasilla Warriors placed five wrestlers in the championship round and garnered 186 total points en route to winning the Glen Vandergaw Invitational at Dimond High School on Saturday.
Jake and Jed Wade each won individual titles for Wasilla in the event. Jake needed double-overtime to defeat Zack Thompson of Ketchikan to win the title at 171 pounds.
The match marked the second time Wade has taken his opponent into double overtime in a championship match this season. Wade lost in double overtime to Sean Ritchie of North Pole earlier this season at the North-South Tourney.
Jake's older brother Jed pinned Zack Rohr of Skyview midway through the third period to take the 189-pound title.
In a showdown of the state's top two heavyweights, Jon Hamilton of Ketchikan edged Wasilla's Jereime Miesler 8-5 in a highly anticipated final-round match. The pair of seniors have been ranked in the top two spots of their weight class for the entire season, but did not meet until Saturday.
Alan Bartelli (103) and Duane Carpenter (125) also placed second for the Warriors.
Colony's Hollan Gravely was named the meet's most outstanding wrestler after defeating Ketchikan's David Mann in the 112-pound finals 9-4. Gravely is just a freshman and Mann is a defending state champ.
Palmer was led by sophomore Trevor Pempek, who pounded Jordan Dubuisson of Service to win the 145-pound title.
The Valley schools will spend the next week competing in a collection of dual meets. Colony will host Palmer and Wasilla in the Valley Tri Meet, Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Moose and Knights will travel to Eagle River to face Chugiak and Friday, while Wasilla will meet the Mustangs on Saturday.
