Warriors cruise to combined team title at Valdez Invitational

VALDEZ — The Wasilla Warriors continued a stellar swimming season by winning the combined team title at the Valdez Invitational in Valdez on Saturday.

The Warriors won 15 of the meet’s 22 events on Saturday to finish with 212 total points.

Jeff Frey, who was named the athlete of the meet following the event, was one of four swimmers on the Wasilla boys’ squad to win two events.

Frey won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle to help the Wasilla boys finish with 120 points, well ahead of the second-place Colony Knights, who finished with 63.

Christian Long (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Max Merriam (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke) and Charles Frey (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) also won a pair of events.

Long, Merriam, Charles Frey and Jeff Frey combined to win the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Rhowe Stefanski posted a pair of second-place finishes to lead the Colony Knights to second in the team standings.

Stefanski finished second to Charles Frey in the 100 butterfly and the runner-up to Long in the 200 freestyle.

Bryan Gary also finished second in the 500 freestyle for the Knights.

Spencer Bloom, Riley Newman, Blake Branham and Richard Liebing combined to finish third in the 200 medley relay for the fourth-place Palmer Moose.

Caity Stigen won a pair of events to lead Wasilla to a first-place finish in the girls team standings.

Stigen won the 50 and 100 freestyle events to help WHS finish with 92 total points.

Brittany Shattuck (200 individual medley) and Maddie Merriam (500 freestyle) also won events.

Shattuck, Stigen, Isla Schwarzburg and Charlotte Tunley combined to win the 200 medley relay for the Warriors.

Colony won three events and finished second in the team standings with 63 points.

Katelyn Payne won the 100 backstroke and Kayla Anderson finished first in the 200 freestyle.

Anderson, Karina Barria, Jenessa Willard and Melody Mileur combined to win the 200 freestyle.

Stacy Swindells and Signe Johnson each notched a third-place finish to lead Palmer to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.
