Warriors finish third in tough Bob Bailey Invite

CHUGIAK — Wasilla picked up two individual championships en route to a third-place finish at the Bob Bailey Memorial Invitational Saturday at Chugiak High School.

Mike Chafin at 125 pounds and Karl Rathbun at 160 each earned titles for the Warriors, which placed six wrestlers in the top-6 at the 36-team tournament.

“We didn’t do too bad,” Wasilla head coach Shawn Hayes said following the meet. “We’ve got a pretty young team.”

Other Wasilla wrestlers to make it onto the podium Saturday included Kendra Nelson (4th at 103 pounds), Chris Gross (6th at 130), Casey Katchinska (3rd at 171) and two more 160-pounders, including Mack Gagnon in fifth and James Langendorf in sixth.

Chris Crane also placed third at 189.

The Chugiak Mustangs won the overall title with 193 points, while Lathrop was second with 161.5 and Wasilla third with 141.

The Palmer Moose got a finals appearance from unseeded Sam Heindel at 189 pounds to earn a 17th-place finish.

Heindel, who was giving up nearly 10 pounds to most of his opponents during the weekend, said he was pleased to be able to work his way so far through the brackets.

“I came in and really surprised myself,” Heindel said after falling to Lathrop’s Kent Osborn in the finals.

Palmer coach Dale Ewart said he’s still hoping a number of athletes from Palmer’s football team will join the squad in the coming weeks to help bolster his thin early-season ranks.

“We’ll see how it works out,” Ewart said.

Wasilla’s Chafin dominated his bracket in his first tournament of the season since joining the wrestling squad after football season. The 125-pound running back for the Warrior football team finished his weekend undefeated after picking up a match-winning escape with under 30 seconds left in his 5-4 win over Dustin Maxwell of East.

“That was a tough one,” Chafin said moments after his match.

Even tougher was the competition Rathbun faced at 160. Trailing most of the match, the Wasilla junior got five of his six points on stalling calls against Chugiak’s Zach Baldwin.

“He was pretty much stalling and I was giving it 110 percent,” Rathbun said.

Trailing by one point, Rathbun was awarded two more at the closing whistle when Baldwin backed up with the two wrestlers in the neutral position.

“I think it was a good decision because I was pushing forward,” Rathbun said.
