WASILLA — Both Valley teams were swept out of the first round of the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Volleyball Championships Thursday at West Anchorage High School.
Cook Inlet Conference champion started the day with a hard-fought 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) win over Wasilla, the No. 3 seed from the Northern Lights Conference.
Emily Cizek led Wasilla with 22 digs in the loss. Delaney Breshears added 11 digs. Cheyenne Green finished with seven kills and nine digs.
Later in the day, defending state champion Dimond beat NLC champion Colony 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-15).
With the losses, both Valley teams will play in elimination matches Friday morning. Wasilla faces Juneau-Douglas, the Southeast Conference champ, at 10 a.m. Colony follows against West Valley, the Mid-Alaska champion, at 11:45 a.m. Despite the losses Thursday, both Wasilla and Colony can still play their way back into the top side of the bracket in the double-elimination state tournament.
