CHUGIAK — The defending 4A state champion Wasilla Warriors opened the 2014-15 prep wrestling season with a runner-up finish in the Bob Bailey Invitational at Chugiak High School Saturday afternoon.
Wasilla crowned three individual champions in the 13-team tournament. Micah Mathis, Andrew Shannon and D.J. Morrow each won their respective weight class.
Mathis, a freshman, pinned Blunka Blunka Jr. of New Stuyahok 20 seconds into the second period of the championship final to win the 98-pound class. Mathis scored the title in the first tournament of his high school career.
Morrow, a veteran, edged Jared Braudis of Bartlett to win the 170-pound title. Shannon earned the 160-pound title with a forfeit victory in the finals.
Palmer, which finished eighth in the team standings, landed one wrestler in the finals. Elija Cannon-Rogers was the runner-up at 182.
Knights second at Peninsula Duals
NIKISKI — In a dual between two of the top squads among their respective classes, Kotzebue edged Colony 36-35 in the championship final of the Peninsula Duals Saturday at Nikiski High School.
The Huskies won eight matches in the dual to beat the Knights and finish as the top team in the 16-team bracket. Half of Kotzebue’s wins came with a pin. Sam Sisco (106 pounds), Chace Booth (126), Caleb Hopkins (132), Jordan Nero (138), Kamber Lucas (160), Mitchell Daigle (285) and Robert Zimmerman (98) won matches for the Knights.
Colony competed in three duals during the final day of the meet. The Knights opened with an 84-4 victory over Voznesenka and followed with a 72-6 win over West Anchorage. Colony beat Northern Lights Conference rival Soldotna 69-15 in the semifinals.
The Knights were seeded second in the bracket.
The Houston Hawks also competed during the final day of the duals meet. Houston finished 1-2. The Hawks opened with a 54-36 win over the Colony junior varsity, but consecutive losses led to their elimination. Nikiski beat Houston 50-31 and Dillingham bounced the Hawks out of the bracket with a 45-36 decision.
