Warriors, Knights open tourney with wins

ANCHORAGE — The Wasilla Warriors and Colony Knights each opened the 2010 T-Bird Classic with first-round wins at East Anchorage High School on Thursday.

Colony opened tourney play with a 49-39 win over the West Anchorage Eagles. Wasilla scored a 61-52 win over Northern Lights Conference rival Soldotna later in the day.

Palmer fell to Ketchikan 56-40 in other first-round action.

Freshman Mary Klapperich scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Knights past West and avenge an early-season loss to the Eagles. Klapperich’s older sister, Kaitlyn, added a dozen points in the victory.

Colony will face Ketchikan today at 5:45 p.m. in the semifinals.

Freshman Alexis Imoe scored 12 to lead Wasilla to the win over the Stars. Senior Carlee Naczi and junior Kelsey Cottle added 11 each for WHS.

The Warriors face tournament host East Anchorage tonight at 7 p.m.

Senior Shawna Thien scored a team-high seven points during the loss to Ketchikan.

The Moose will face West today at 2:15 p.m.

Knights in first round

ANCHORAGE — Nome became the first Alaska program to beat Colony this season, scoring a 68-60 win over the Knights during the first round of the Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High School on Thursday.

Senior captain John Palmer scored a game-high 20 points in the loss. Senior Scott Herman added 15.

Mason Evans, one of three Nanooks in double figures, scored 16 for Nome.

The Knights fall back into the consolation round and will play Grace Christian today at 2:45 p.m.

EIELSON — The Eielson Ravens edged Houston 57-56 in nonconfernce action on Eielson Air Force Base Thursday evening.
