PALMER — A pair of players enjoyed a couple of big periods and helped the Wasilla Warriors get past upset-minded Monroe Catholic.
Porter Schachle and Langston Bouma combined to score Wasilla’s final five goals during a 7-4 win over Monroe, the defending small-schools state champion, Thursday, during the opening day of the Palmer Hockey Showdown at the MTA Events Center in Palmer.
Schachle bagged a hat trick and Bouma added two goals as Wasilla improved to 1-0-2 overall. Trailing 3-2, Bouma tied the score at 3 with his goal late in the second. Schachle scored the first of his three with 20 seconds left in the middle frame.
Schachle scored again at the 9:23 mark of the third to provide the eventual game-winner.
Schachle and Bouma added goals within a 19-second span later in the period. Alex Engan and Hayden Masterson also scored for Wasilla. Aaron Campbell stopped 30 shots in the win.
Landon Bartels and Riley Ott each finished with a goal and an assist for the Rams.
Wasilla continues tournament play Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Dimond.
Colony 4, Lathrop 1
Foster Riekena sparked Colony early, and the Knights scored a 4-1 win over Lathrop.
Riekena scored less than two minutes into regulation in the win. Ethan Korynta, Cooper Smith and Dane Jellich added goals for the Knights. Colony continues tourney play against Monroe Friday at 4:45 p.m.
Dimond 6, Palmer 2
Dimond used four second-period goals to post a 6-2 win over host Palmer in Thursday’s late game.
Noah Keil scored twice for the Moose, getting both of his goals during a four-minute span early in the second period.
Jaiden Gibson led Dimond with two goals and two assists. Max Hickel added a pair of goals for Dimond.
Palmer hosts Eagle River Friday at 8:15 p.m.
Homer 4, Eagle River 3
Homer scored a pair of unanswered goals in the third period and posted a 4-3 nonconference win over Eagle River.
Tim Blakely tied the game at 3 midway through the third, and Isaiah Nevak supplied the game-winner with 4:57 left to play.
Joshua Williamson and Tucker Weston also scored for the Mariners, who outshot Eagle River 43-31 in the win. Eagle River goalie Ryan Gray made 39 saves, including 18 in both the first and third periods.
Austin Linn, Nick Silance and Tucker Lien scored for the Wolves.
