WASILLA — The Valley is showing its potential for prep wrestling depth early in the 2016 season.
Four Valley squads posted top-4 finishes in tournaments throughout the state last weekend, and two brought home team titles.
Wasilla scored hardware at two different tournaments after sending squads to both the Throwdown in Snowtown in Valdez and the West Anchorage Classic in Anchorage. Four different Warriors won the respective weight classes to help Wasilla finish with 189 points to finish first in the team standings of the Valdez tournament. Charles Jones started the squad off with a win at 98 pounds. Wesley Fraker (106), Sterling Uhlenhake (120) and Dillon Simpson (132) also finished first for the Warriors.
Wasilla was also second at the West tournament, finishing with 141.5 points in the standings. Defending state champion Samuel Wolff won the 145-pound class for the Warriors. Alexander Logsdon (106), Christion Alexander (132), Cole George (160) and Chase Minnick (220) also won weight classes for Wasilla.
South Anchorage captured the team title with 162.5 total points.
Colony, last year’s state runner-up, captured the team title at the Pilot Invitational, hosted by Thunder Mountain High School in Juneau. Defending state champions Robert Haan (195) and Levi Hopkins (138) were among eight Knights to win their weight class. Austin Edwards (98), Rush Fannon (113), Sam Sisco (126), Caleb Hopkins (160), Chayse Eby (182) and Klancey Davis (285) also finished first for the Knights.
The Houston Hawks finished as the runner-up during the Homer Round Robin Rumble at Homer High School. Shawn Graham (195) and Malaki Barrett (220) each earned runner-up finishes to help Houston finish with 134 points in the team standings. Host Homer won its own tourney with 238 points.
Susitna Valley and Redington also competed in the Homer tournament. Marshall Pinard scored a title at 285 to lead the Rams. Colton Jones finished second at 138 for the Huskies.
Along with Wasilla, Palmer also made the trip to Valdez and finished fourth in the Throwdown at Snowtown. Julian Davis led the Moose with a first-place finish at 152 pounds.
