The Wasilla girls have now guaranteed a 1-2 showdown with Lathrop tonight. The Warriors earned 29 total points in the latest 4A girls hoops poll and are ranked second among 4A programs. The Malemutes were a unanimous choice for first place.
The girls' hoops powers will battle tonight at Wasilla High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
Wasilla improved its record to 11-3 with a 53-42 win over Palmer in the Warrior gym on Tuesday. Lathrop is 13-1 this season. The only blemish on the Malemutes' mark is a loss to Colony earlier this season.
Colony (11-4) earned four votes in the poll, placing them outside the top five.
Palmer is the lone Valley squad to be ranked in the boys class. The 12-3 Moose received 12 votes in the poll, ranking them fifth. Palmer is a perfect 6-0 in Region III play.
Bartlett hung on to the top spot in the boys 4A polls, receiving all nine first place votes.
The tightest race is the battle in the class 3A girls' poll. Barrow is first with 32 total points, but the next four squads are separated by just one point.
Petersburg and Valdez are tied for second with 25 total points and Seward and Monroe Catholic are tied with 24 points. Barrow and Petersburg each earned three first-place votes, while Valdez and Seward earned two first-place votes.
The Alaska prep hoops media poll is tabulated by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Sportswriters from across the state vote in the poll. Results are available each week in the Friday edition of the Frontiersman. Points are awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis.
