Warriors off to fast start

WASILLA — The Wasilla Warriors are off to a fast start to the prep track and field season, thanks in part to Morgan Dampier.

The Wasilla sophomore won three events to help the Warriors girls and boys sweep the Tuesday Night at the Races meet at The Dome in Anchorage on Tuesday.

Dampier finished first in the 100-, 400- and 800-meter races Tuesday, and is currently ranked first in the state in each of those three events. Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said Dampier also posted a state-best time in the 200, but that performance came in an unofficial meet.

“She’s top in the state in the 100, 200, 400 and 800. I’ve never even heard of that,” Howell said.

Having an athlete excel in so many events, so early, sounds like a luxury, but Howell said the trick is scaling down the number of events in order to create an appropriate training regimine. Training for the sprints, Howell said, can be much different than preparing for mid-distance events.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do with her,” Howell said of his sophomore standout. “We need to make sure she’s doing the right workouts.”

Freshman Jenna Ford and senior Skyler Nuss also won events to help lead the Wasilla girls to the lopsided victory in the girls’ team standings. With five individual titles and seven runner-up finishes, the Warriors scored 141 total team poins, more than twice second-place Grace Christian’s 67.5.

Ford won the 3,200 and Nuss finished first in the 100-meter hurdles.

Palmer finished fourth in the seven-team field with 27 points and Houston was fifth. Senior Erin LaMere led the Moose with a first-place finish in the shot put.

Senior Manny Curtis won a pair of events to help the Warriors finish first in the boys’ team standings with 89.5 points. Curtis finished first in both the high jump and triple jump. Defending state champion John Knowles won the shot put for the Warriors.

Senior John Scoresby won the 100 to lead Palmer to a third-place finish in the boys’ standings. Scoresby led a group of four Moose at the front of the pack. Junior Jim McCall, junior David Clement and freshman Levi Turner also finished in the top four for Palmer.

Sophomore Colton Buzby won the 400 to lead Houston to a fifth-place finish.

Wasilla and Palmer will return to The Dome Saturday afternoon for a 12-team meet.
