CHUGIAK - Through Friday's semifinals it appears that the Wasilla High School wrestling team is on the verge of joining an elite group.
Having established a 60 point lead over second place South Anchorage, the Warriors are primed to claim their third straight Class 4A state wrestling title, a feat only accomplished by West Valley which won four straight between 1986 and 1991.
If having a large point lead was not enough of a cushion, the Warriors had 11 wrestlers compete in the semi-finals and eight of them advanced to the championship matches held late Saturday night. Six advanced to the finals with wins.
In a rematch of the Northern Lights Conference championships held last Saturday, Alan Bartelli will face Jimmy Eggemeyer of Kodiak for the 112-pound crown and Trevor Pempek will square off against Clark Buffington from Skyview in the 145-pound division.
Another rematch from the conference tournament involves Colony's Aaron Boss, who will face Michaella Hutchison of Skyview for the 103-pound title.
A pair of two-time state champions from the Valley have a chance to add a third notch on their belt during the finals.
Wasilla's Jake Wade hopes to rebound from a disappointing loss in the conference championships. He will face Scott Lucas of South Anchorage for the 189-pound title.
Colony's Hollan Gravely, who won the 112-pound title as a freshman and the 125-pound title last season hopes to add the 130-pound title to his resume with a victory over Ted Nelvis of West Anchorage.
Bartelli and Miller are seeking their second state title as well.
Other finalist from Wasilla include Sam Miller (112), Duane Carpenter (140) and Mike Trudeau (152)
Championship match results were not available at press time and will appear in Tuesday's paper.
