WASILLA - The Wasilla Warriors were forced to cancel about a half-dozen games early in the season due to poor weather and a soggy outfield at their home park. But Wasilla was finally able to hit the diamond Wednesday. And the Warriors opened the season with a victory.
Wasilla clubbed South Anchorage 13-5 during the first day of the Matautia Invitational in Kodiak.
Taylon Ottinger used a two-run double to spark Wasilla's seven-run second inning. Ottinger was 4 of 4 at the plate, drove in three runs and scored twice. Leadoff hitter Kyle Graham finished with three runs scored in the win. Clayton Boyett was 3 of 4 with two runs and an RBI.
Every hitter in the starting lineup either drove in a run or scored a run. Five Warriors had at least a run and an RBI. Wasilla finished with 13 hits.
Nolan Murphy made the start for Wasilla and allowed two hits over two innings.
Thursday, host Kodiak scored a 5-4 walk-off win over the Warriors. The Bears plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the rally. This came after Wasilla scored three times in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
Ben Warner collected two of Wasilla's six hits in the loss, and drove in three runs. Clayton Boyett also had an RBI.
