WASILLA — Fairbanks Post 30 found a way to take a lead. But the American Legion squad from the Interior couldn’t find a way to keep it.
The Wasilla Road Warriors exploded for a dozen runs during an two-inning stretch to record a 15-7 come-from-behind win over Fairbanks during the second day of the Todd Ryan Memorial baseball tournament Saturday at McManus Field in Wasilla.
Wasilla improved to 8-1 overall with the win and 3-0 in the tournament the team hosts every July. The Road Warriors can capture the Todd Ryan title with a win over Lanakila, Hawaii, Sunday. The teams meet at 6 p.m. at McManus Field.
Four different players finished with multiple hits for the Road Warriors. Ben Werner and Jeffrey Forrest both finished 4 for 5 with two RBI in the win. Forster scored twice and Werner finished with two runs. Matt Palmer collected two hits, three runs and three RBI. Koby Burns added three runs and two RBI.
Wasilla finished with 16 hits in the victory.
The Road Warriors scored a pair of lopsided victories during the opening day of the tournament, Friday, scoring an 11-1 win over Fairbanks Post 11 and 10-0 shutout of Palmer.
Wasilla scored five runs in both the third and fifth innings of the victory over Fairbanks Post 11. Burns, Matt Palmer and Hank Boyer drove in two runs each. Forster, Sam Loyer and Matt Palmer scored two runs each.
Matt Palmer led Wasilla with three RBI against the Palmer post. Burns and Boyer drove in two runs each against the Pioneers in the five-inning game.
Palmer also played on Saturday, falling to Lanakila, Hawaii, 7-6. Wyatt Shults led the Pioneers with two runs scored.
The tournament continues Sunday with Fairbanks Post 11 facing Lanakila at noon. Palmer follows against Fairbanks Post 30 at 3 p.m. Wasilla meets Lanakila at 6 p.m.
