Wasilla Warriors flag football head coach Mat Bredburg has complete confidence in his quarterback, Savannah Kroon.
“It’s really nice as a coach to say, all right quarterback, let’s see what ya got,” Bredburg said.
On Tuesday, Kroon had a four touchdown night,
Kroon threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Warriors to a 26-7 win over rival Colony-Palmer at Wasilla’s Veterans Memorial Field.
“She's a great leader, great athlete,” Bredburg said of his signal caller. “She makes all of the calls.”
Kroon connected with Kyndra Boling on a 5-yard touchdown pass in the first to give Wasilla an early lead. In the second half, Kroon found Danielle Steiner on a 16-yard score, and Daphne Olsen on a 20-yard scoring pass. Kroon also rushed for a 7-yard touchdown.
Wasilla improved to 11-3 with the win.
“We’ve got a great group of girls. It’s been a lot of fun,” Bredburg said. “We’ve been evolving. There’s a lot more to do but we’re getting there.”
Hayden Vanderpool gave Colony-Palmer a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter with a 7-yard touchdown pass.
The Wasilla and Colony-Palmer squads are both in their first season as a varsity program. Girls flag football made its debut in the Mat-Su last season. Wasilla shared a co-op team with Redington last year. This year, Bredburg said Wasilla has enough players for varsity and junior varsity teams. Redington has its own junior varsity team.
Colony-Palmer includes athletes for CHS, PHS, Mat-Su Career and Technical High School and Mat-Su Central.
Both Wasilla and Colony-Palmer will enter their first region tournament, which starts Thursday at Colony High School. Wasilla is the No 2 seed, and plays Lathrop Thursday at p.m. at CHS.
Bredburg said Wasilla finished 1-1 against the Malemutes during the regular season. Colony-Palmer opens against West Valley Thursday at 11 a.m. The winner of that game moves forward to play top-seeded North Pole Thursday at 3 p.m.
The semifinals are Friday at 7 p.m. and the region championship is Saturday at 1 p.m.
