Warriors second at Kenai Invite

KENAI — The Wasilla boys and girls combined to finish second overall in the Kenai Invitational at Kenai Central High School last week.

Led by a pair of relay wins, Wasilla finished second in the boys’ standings with 92 total points, just a dozen shy of first-place Kodiak.

Christian Long, Max Merriam, Charles Frey and Jeff Frey combined to win both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Long, Merriam and Jeff Frey also won individual races during the single-day meet.

Long won a pair of events for WHS. H used a time of 1 minute, 51 seconds to win the 200-yard freestyle, beating second-place Anders Nyquist, of Kenai, by eight seconds. He beat Kodiak’s Hayden Linscheid by more than five seconds to win.

Merriam won the 100 breakstroke and finished second in the 200 individual medley for WHS, while Jeff Frey won the 100 freestyle.

Charles Long was second in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly.

Colony finished third in the boys’ standings, led by Alexander Deedy’s second-place finish in the 1-meter diving.

Rhowe Stefanski (100 freestyle) and Nicholas Brunger (200 freestyle) each finished third for CHS.

Richard Liebing finished eighth in the dive to lead the Moose.

The Warriors used 27 total points to finish fourth in the girls’ standings.

Mariah Schachle was the lone Valley athlete to win an event in the girls’ class, with a victory in the 1-meter dive. Her 167.15 total points pushed her ahead of teammate Zandra Christiansen, who finished second.

Caity Stigen finished fifth in the 50 freestyle for CHS.

Suzannah Whitford finished third in the diving event to lead the Colony Knights, who finished the meet in a fifth-place tie in the team standings with host Kenai.

Karina Barria finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 200 individual medley for the Knights.

Stacy Swindells led Palmer with a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
