Warriors second at North Pole tourney

NORTH POLE — Three Wasilla grapplers won individual titles and the Warriors finished second in the team standings during the John Tobin Invitational at North Pole High School on Saturday.

Derek Johnsen (145), Jake Johnson (215) and Ryan Pomrenke (285) each won their weight classes during the single-day bracketed tournament. Abe Fox (119) and Yuriy Makitrin also advanced to the final round and placed second. Fox, the state’s top-ranked wrestler at 119, did not wrestle in the final.

LJ Leppanen (135) and Cole Frohling (215) each advanced to the final round and placed second to lead the seventh-place Palmer Moose.

Teams in the Tobin participated in a duals meet on Friday. Wasilla beat West Valley 63-11, but were edged by Lathrop 36-32. North Pole beat Palmer 42-18.
