SOLDOTNA -- After winning the first two major events of the 4A prep wrestling season, the Wasilla Warriors finished second in the annual North-South Invitational at Soldotna High School Saturday.
South Anchorage won its first tournament in the history of its wrestling program, edging the Warriors by just four points.
Wasilla placed three wrestlers into the finals. Alan Bartelli and Trevor Pempek each won their respective weight classes. Chuck Carpenter finished second.
Bartelli pinned Josh Baker, of Anchorage Christian School, with 19 seconds left in the first period to win at 103 pounds. Pempek edged Eddie Buffington, of Skyview, 6-5 to win the 152-pound title.
Wade Wilson, of South Anchorage, defeated Carpenter 10-6 in the 160-pound final.
Palmer and Colony each had an individual winner. Colony's Dustin Killian defeated Steven Guana, of Kodiak, 13-6 to win at 119. Palmer junior Jake Heun, who recently moved up from 215, defeated Colony's James Savage to win the heavyweight title.
The North-South Invite is an annual tourney with venues that rotate between Region III programs in the Mat-Su area and the Kenai Peninsula. Last season Wasilla hosted the event. This year 18 varsity squads were in a field which included the defending 4A state champion, Wasilla, the 4A runner-up, Skyview and the defending 1-2-3A state title winners, ACS.
